Why We Need Salvation
Romans 5:8..."But God demonstrates His own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us."
We are all sinners and have done things that are displeasing to God. There is no one who is innocent before God, and nothing can be done to gain a right relationship with Him without Jesus Christ. . This is not an easy thing for many people to come to grips with, but it is vital information if we are to understand why a savior is needed.
Romans 6:23a..."For the wages of sin is death..."
Death, both physical and spiritual, is the consequence for our sin. It is the penalty for our actions and is the punishment that we all deserve. Remember the word "wages" indicates what we earn...what is ours.
How God Provides Salvation
Romans 6:23b..."but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord."
Romans 6:23 clearly demonstrates God's great mercy and grace. He withholds the punishment we deserve (mercy) and gives us a gift that we do not deserve (grace). "Grace that is Greater than all our Sin".
Romans 5:8..."But God demonstrates His own love for us in this...While we were still sinners, Christ died for us."
Christ died for us and paid the price for our sin. In John 15:13, Jesus says, "Greater love has no man than this, that he lay down his life for his friends." Jesus willing laid down His life for each of us. He paid a debt that He did not owe, because we owed a debt that we could not pay.
How We Can Receive Salvation
Romans 10:9..."That if you confess with your mouth, 'Jesus is Lord,' and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved."
This passage is twofold: an outward expression and an inward faith. We are to confess to others that "Jesus is Lord". Furthermore, we are to believe in our heart that He was resurrected from the dead. The Greek word translated as heart is 'kardia', which refers to the seat of the inner self: the life, soul, mind, and spirit. We are to believe with all our heart that Jesus rose from the dead and gained victory over death on our behalf. He is at the right hand of the Father.
Romans 10:13..."Everyone who calls on the Name of the Lord will be saved."
This reiterates Romans 10:9 and shows that God wants us to call upon Him for all things. When we have a Christ-centered life, and believe in Him with all that we are, we will instinctively call upon Him in all time of joy, need, or sorrow.
The Results of Salvation
Romans 5:1..."Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ."
Romans 3:10 tells us tht "There is no one righteous, not even one." However, when we have faith that Jesus Christ is our Savior and Lord we become justified, or righteous, in the eyes of God. We can then receive the peace that comes from being confident that we have come into a right relationship with God through His Only Begotten Son, Jesus Christ (John 3:16)
The Three Transfers
Romans 5:12..."Therefore, as sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin, and in this way, death came to all men, because all sinned.
The first transfer is the transfer of Adam's sin upon all humanity. We are born into sin and we all act accordingly. We are not sinners because we sin, we sin because we are sinners.
2 Corinthians 5:21a..."God made Him (Jesus) who had no sin to be sin for us..."
The second transfer is our sin being transferred to Jesus. He is the perfect and blameless offering to make atonement for us.
2 Corinthians 5:21... "...so that in Him (Jesus) we might become the righteousness of God."
The third transfer is the righteousness of Jesus being transferred to us through faith in Him. We cannot become righteous on our own, it is only by the Blood of Jesus Christ that we can come to a right relationship with God. He made the provision with the Gift of His Son. The Gift is ours to accept or reject. What will you do with Jesus?
